Why do I need to worm my pet?

Pets need to be wormed regularly to keep them healthy and to prevent the consequences of worm infestations, which can be fatal.

Common worms that affect our pets:

• Round Worm (cats and dogs)
• Tape Worm (cats and dogs)
• Lung Worm (dogs)

How often should I worm my pet?

Puppies and kittens should be wormed monthly until they are six months of age. Then all cats and dogs should be wormed routinely every three months. You may want to worm your dog more frequently if you are worried about lung worm.

What else can I do to protect my dog from Lung Worm?

Lung worm is particularly nasty. It is a type of parasitic worm (affecting dogs and foxes) that can be carried by slugs and snails. If your dog eats slugs and snails (either accidentally or on purpose) while out and about they may become infected. The slime trails left around outdoor food and water bowls or on toys left in the garden can also be enough to cause infection.

Other than regular worming (which is essential), the best way to protect your dog from lung worm is to control the access that they have to any potential risk – this means taking any toys left outside back indoors and removing outside water bowls when they are not being used. Look out for slugs and snail trails in your garden and be aware where the risks are.

How your vet can help with worming

Our vets will be able to give guidance on worming when your pet has their first vaccination. They will be able to advise on the best methods of treatment, prevention and control of worms and other internal parasites. There are different options available (tablets, liquids, granules and so on), so the vet will be able to help you find what works best for you and your pet.

Not all wormers cover all worms, so it is worth reviewing your worming programme with your vet at your pet’s annual check-up. Getting your wormers directly from your veterinary practice also gives you the peace of mind that you are getting an appropriate and effective wormer.
